Best Practices: “M” Language for Data ETL & DAX for Measures calculations in Dashboards

The goal is to communicate the data effectively, not to overwhelm the user with too much information at once. These are our TEN COMMANDMENTS Visualizations in Reports and Dashboards in Power BI.

1. We follow the “8-10 rule” of reports and dashboards in Power BI. It is a guideline for creating effective and user-friendly visualizations. This rule helps to ensure that our reports and dashboards are not over-crowded, and that the most important information is easily digestible by the users. It suggests:

  • When creating reports, use a maximum of 8 visuals per report page.
  • For dashboards, use a maximum of 10 tiles.

2. First things first. We place the most important data on the top left corner.

3. We accentuate the most important information to make them different and noticeable.

4. We use the right visuals to ensure that visuals tell a story and are easy to read and understand.

5. If ever required, we use only certified third-party visuals. Usually, we avoid.

6. We use filters more and slicers sparingly.

7. We import / make visible only the necessary fields and tables.

8. We use clear and consistent formatting - a consistent color scheme, font size and style throughout the report.

9. We profusely use Labels and Annotations – they provide context to the data.

10. We use drill-through and drill-down. This allows the viewer to drill through the data and see detailed information, or drill down to see related data.
